Worlds Oldest Hotel Has Been Operated by the Same Family for Over 1,300 Years

The Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan in Kyoto, Japan has seen many rises and falls, considering that it’s over 1,300 years old. Yes, that’s a feat like no other, but what’s astonishing is the fact that it is still run by the original founding family to this very day.

That is 52 generations and counting to be exact.

Making the Guinness World Records as the oldest Inn in operation, the hot springs hotel has stood proud through renovations, modernization and upgrades, which have seen upgraded baths which pump 1000’s of liters of naturally heated water per minute.

Somehow, through all the generations, the hotel has manged to maintain historic tradition and atmosphere, with tatami mat-floored rooms, no internet access and the most gorgeous scenic views.

The restaurant offers the highest quality locally sourced meals, including Koshu beef. Guests can also partake in some joyful karaoke.

The hot springs are definitely the focus and one can understand why: natural springs, surrounded by mountains and forests with flowing ravines. I would never want to leave.

Built in 705 AD by Fujiwara Mahito, son of an aid to the 38th emperor of Japan, the hotel has seen a wide variety of guests, ranging from Samurai and shogun to celebrities, tourists and even politicians and to this very day, hosts the same family tradition it has always been recognized for.
