As a kid, one of my favorite things to do when going to the arcade or a mall was grab a few coins to play on the claw grabber machines. Yes, they all seemed rigged and the chances of actually winning anything was slim, but on the odd occasion I managed to win something, I’d walk off with gleaming pride.
Footage has recently emerged however of an arcade game which sparked some major anger throughout a community – and for very serious reason.
With us being used to the normal prizes of teddies, themed toys and money strapped to sponges, this machine has real life dogs as prizes…
Crammed into little buckets, the metal claw drops down on them, snatching them up and depositing them into the vent, you can also see a person collecting his ‘prize’.
It’s unclear as to where or when this happened, but biologist, Daniel Schneider has shared the video on twitter, captioning it with: “Some of those puppies in that game in #Japan are real. WTF. RT. #BeKindToAnimals”
There is also suspicion that the machine is in fact China and this idea isn’t too far fetched, considering what other live animal attractions they have offered in the past such as living fish and terrapins in plastic, water-filled key-chain pouches.
Aside from the obvious dangers imposed on the dogs by being lifted by a claw, the concern of sanitary conditions and space have arisen, along with the weight of responsibility which is clearly lacking, disregarding these dogs’ futures.
Elisa Allen, director of animal rights group PETA, described the video as ‘a matter of life and death’.
Speaking to The Mirror, she said:
“Animals aren’t disposable toys, and PETA urges Chinese authorities to look into this video as a matter of urgency – if the dogs are real, it’s not a harmless arcade game but rather a matter of life and death.
Live animals – including lobsters, turtles, and crabs – are commonly sold in claw machines across China.
They can easily be hurt by being repeatedly dropped, and some have been left to endure a painful death from dehydration or starvation.”
Responding to the video on Twitter, people were just as disgusted.
Just last year, a Chinese zoo was under fire due to visitors throwing rocks at a crocodile, to see whether he was real, leaving him bloodied and bruised.
