Described as a “huge win” for animals, consumers and science, the Australian senate just passed a bill to effectively ban all cosmetic testing on animals, known better as the Industrial Chemicals Bills 2017.
While the bill doesn’t explicitly ban testing as such, it prohibits the usage of data that has come from animal testing, whenever introducing a new chemical or beauty ingredient.
Simply, Australia will no longer accept these results, which would mark these products unable to be sold on the Australian market unless results are proven to be sourced from other forms of testing.
According to the Department of Health’s information on the bill: “As technology has advanced, there has been an international move away from the use of animals for this purpose. Animal tests are expensive, time consuming to conduct and are questioned on both ethical and scientific grounds.”
This move is significant in aid of fighting to end animal testing and to encourage cruelty-free practices. The Body Shop, vocal anti-animal testing warrior has stepped up and remarked on this Australian Milestone.
“We are celebrating a major win in the fight to end animal testing. The Body Shop has been on a mission to end cosmetic animal testing globally for over 30 years, so to have this bill passed in Australia is fantastic progress. Hopefully, we will see more governments around the world follow suit,” says Shannon Chrisp marketing and corporate responsibility director for The Body Shop Australia.
Australia isn’t the only market making huge headlines when it comes to preventing animal cruelty. In the most ambitious campaign against animal testing ever recorded, The Body Shop together with Cruelty Free International petitioned against cosmetic animal testing, by bringing it forward to the United Nations Headquarters in NY City last year, creating a global framework in order to end animal testing altogether.
For now, it’s only a matter of time before this horrendous procedure will be put to rest, forever.
