When we look at pictures of places around the planet, it seems like such a contrasting world from country to country. Yet, the reality is much different. The pictures we are seeing are not truly representing what things are like for a typical citizen. They do not represent the way we all live from day-to-day.
If you take a look around you, that is your world – what you surround yourself with for the most part of every day. Your home – that is the real world – and this is the same for everyone, everywhere. From this perspective, the difference does not lie in country borders, but in income.
The following pictures are from a project called Dollar Street. It was invented by Anna Rosling Rönnlund at Gapminder. “People in other cultures are often portrayed as scary or exotic.” Anna explains: “This has to change. We want to show how people really live. It seemed natural to use photos as data so people can see for themselves what life looks like on different income levels. Dollar Street lets you visit many, many homes all over the world. Without travelling.”

The following images are of six families from around the world – two from the poor end of dollar street, two from the rich end, and two from the middle. The pair of families from each category are all from different countries. They show that no matter what country the family comes from, they do things in almost the same way depending on how much the family earns. Therefore, your world is very similar to anyone else’s on the planet according to your family’s income, not according to your nationality.
