Teenager Cameron Simmons called the Sumter Police Department after having had an argument with his mom. Officer Gaetano Acerra went to the house and met with the distraught boy to see what he could do to help. That’s when he saw the kids room – a completely empty space. There wasn’t even a bed and all his clothes were in trash bags.

Cameron and his mom had fallen on hard times after they moved from Texas to South Carolina so they could take care of a sick relative. As the boy told the officer the story, a plan was forming in Acerra’s mind to help the young boy out. It took him weeks to make it happen but eventually, his plan panned out.
Acerra gathered items for the family, on his own and through donation. He collected everything necessary to give Cameron a complete bedroom. That lucky little boy was given a television, a new desk, a bed, and a Wii game system. Plus, he’d made a new friend for life.
The officer said he did it because it was the right thing to do. He said that anyone should do what he did, if they can. What most people considered to be a policeman acting entirely beyond his line of duty, he just thought was a normal act of humanity.
“I didn’t do this for publicity, or, you know, to get people to notice me, I did it because I could, and it was the right thing to do; I think people should do things like this.” – Acerra
Cameron was completely surprised and moved to tears when he realized what the officer had done for him and his family. He thanked the kind man for the generosity and happily said, “Now my back won’t hurt when I sleep.”
