Over one million children are now benefiting from the programs supported by Swiss tennis player Roger Federer’s charitable activity. He founded the Roger Federer Foundation back in 2004 with the mission to empower children through a good education; to give them the opportunity to take their future into their own hands and play an active part in shaping it.
They have done this by creating preschools across the globe where children are now learning and growing healthy, with a hearty meal every day. The foundation funds the building of these schools and more. The early childhood centers are scattered throughout six countries, with more than 50 preschools in Malawi, Southern Africa, alone.
In celebration of the tenth anniversary of his Roger Federer Foundation, he went to visit one of the schools in Malawi. The children were thrilled when the tennis superstar came to visit them for the first time. He spent the entire day at the preschool visiting, sitting in classes, helping cook and serve lunch, and hanging out with the kids on their playground.
Federer said during his visit:
“I’m so happy and emotional that I can see a preschool of this quality here–it’s quite extraordinary. The community is so committed to helping the kids, it’s so important (as) the foundation for learning.”
Back in 2015, the Roger Federer Foundation set a goal to be feeding and teaching one million kids by 2018. Amazingly, the foundation not only met their goal of supporting 1 million children, but surpassed it by more than a hundred!
Here’s what the CEO of the Roger Federer Foundation, Janine Händel, had to say about their achievement:
“It took a lot of work and determination to achieve this amazing thing. There was no other possibility than achieving this goal because Roger always achieves his goals. There are one million children which benefits from the major quality of education in the school, pre-school, kindergarten. One million children have now a better chance to make their way in life, to get a job, to exit from poverty…Roger believes in the empowerment of the people and their potential. That’s a fundamental value in our every-day work. We strongly believe early education is one of the most powerful weapons to empower children exiting from poverty. It’s actually proven that education makes people better citizen, be more prepared when it comes to dealing with issues, and they have more instruments to manage their life.”
