The Earth is 4.6 billion years old. Scaling to 46 years, humans have been here four hours. The industrial revolution began one minute ago and in that time we’ve destroyed more than half of the world’s forests. – Greenpeace

One of the biggest human influences on climate change is deforestation. Enter the team from Rainforest Connection (or RFCx for short) who have developed a technology that re-purposes old smart phones to monitor protected forests for the sound of chainsaws. Once detected, these devices send out a signal notifying authorities of the location of the logging poachers and forests get saved. By their reckoning each device can protect over three square kilometers of rainforest; saving the equivalent of 3,000 cars being taken off of the road, simply by preserving the trees. Find out more about how you can support them by crowdfunding, donating your old smartphone or both at www.rfcx.org

If you want to discover how RFCx came up with this ingenious idea check out this TED talk from Engineer Topher White as he shares this simple, scalable way to stop this brutal deforestation — that starts with your old cell phone.

In case you need a few more reasons to protect the rainforest.

  1. It is a leading cause of climate change. Deforestation is the second largest producer of CO2 after fossil fuel.
  2. It is causing global, mass extinctions. We are facing the worst extinction rate since the dinosaurs.
  3. It is mostly caused by illegal activity. Accounting for 50-90%!
