64-year-old Jo-Ani Johnson, who found her first heather-colored follicle growing atop her head in her twenties, is here to tell you that there’s no reason — other than this silly societal standard we’ve come to follow — that you should ever fear “going gray.”

“One day, when I went back to work, my boss looked over at me and said, ‘Oh, you’re getting gray,'” Johnson tells Allure. “I panicked, and proceeded to try to dye my hair.” After many attempts to conceal her gray shade, Johnson says she eventually gave up — and moved on. “Then I met a young man who hated the blonde,” she says. “He’s now my husband. We just celebrated our 20th anniversary.”
