The internet is not just a place were you can satisfy all cute cat video cravings – or even creep that person you fancied at school.

Every once in a while, it demonstrates an ability to genuinely and almost painfully move us.

The internet is not just a place were you can satisfy all cute cat video cravings – or even creep that person you fancied at school.

Every once in a while, it demonstrates an ability to genuinely and almost painfully move us.

Of all the sites with the power to do this, Gumtree may seem an unlikely medium. However, a recent advert on the classified ad site has made a lot of people feel incredibly emotional.

The man behind the ad is Ray Johnstone.

Based in Adelaide, Australia, Ray is a widowed pensioner and keen land-based fisherman who just wants to find someone in a “similar position to myself.”

Here’s the advert in full.

“My Name is Ray Johnstone, Australian.

“I’m a widowed pensioner who is looking for a fishing mate.

“My previous fishing mate is now deceased.

“I am a land based fisherman. I have all the gear for all types of fish that is required for land-based fishing.

“What I want is a fishing mate in a similar position to myself who also wants someone to go fishing with.

“I am willing to share all the costs e.g. petrol, bait and should you happen to own a boat [I am] willing to pay all ramp fees, but happy if you are also a land based fisherman.”

Of course, we don’t know Ray and what his social life is like.

Just because he is of a certain age does not necessarily mean he struggles for company.

But there is something affecting and a little upsetting about the insinuation of loneliness – especially with elderly people, who are often overlooked and pushed to the margins.

The advert has already been viewed over 44,000 times – and there may be a happy ending in the pipeline.

Johnstone, from South Australia, got more than he bargained for when his story received more than a million views on Facebook, and he received around 100 replies. He told 7 News:

”It gets a bit lonely just sitting around watching the TV a lot of the time. Going fishing by yourself is not much fun.

When I started getting a few phone calls this morning I thought it was just because of my age, but then it kept going, and going and going.”

His story has obviously touched the Australian people, and Johnstone’s been receiving a bit of fame since:

9News confirmed that an unnamed someone had reached out to Ray, and there are plans for the pair to meet up later this week.

Whoever they are, we’re sure they’ll have a wonderful time.
