There is no greater love than a parent’s love for their children and a parent with Down syndrome’s love is as great, as shown in a Syrian student’s story about his father.

Sader Issa, a dentistry student in Syria, shared the story of growing up with his father, Jad, who has Down syndrome. According to Sader, his dad is selfless and a pillar of the community. He showered Sader with love and he did the best that he could to make his childhood the same as any child’s.

Sader has never been ashamed of his father, on the contrary, he is very proud of him. His dad helped him become the person he is today. Although living with Down syndrome is not always easy, Sader Jad have a loving relationship that many would envy.

The two often spend time together at Jad’s workplace at the mill near their home. “I’m proud of my father. Throughout my life he has been the greatest support for me when I needed it,” Sader said about his father, a man who shows his love for others without wanting or expecting anything in return.

Jad often tells people how proud he is of Sader by saying “my son is a doctor.”

“It’s possible to see when his eyes are filled with joy and satisfaction, as if to express: yes, I have Down syndrome, but I raised this man and did everything in my power to make him become a doctor and help others,” Sader explained.

A research study of parents with Down syndrome children resulted in very positive conclusions. In one study done in 2012 with 2,044 participating parents, 99 percent of the respondents said that they love their children. 97 percent said they were proud of them and 79 percent thought their outlook on life was more positive because of having them in their lives.

Only 5 percent of parents were embarrassed by their child and 4 percent regrets having them. This shows that the vast majority of parents with Down syndrome children accept them as they are and are happy to them just the way they are.
