In an unprecedented move, California has banned the manufacture and sale of animal fur, the first state in the US to do so.
Effective after 2023, the new law will ban residents from selling or making clothes, shoes or bags with fur.
Governor Gavin Newsom, signed off on the law and another, banning the use of most animals performing in circuses, said: “California is a leader when it comes to animal welfare and today that leadership includes banning the sale of fur
“But we are doing more than that. We are making a statement to the world that beautiful wild animals like bears and tigers have no place on trapeze wires or jumping through flames.”
A Humane Society US spokesperson commented on the ban: “We applaud Gov Newsom and the state’s lawmakers for recognizing that California citizens do not want their state’s markets to contribute to the demand for fur products.”
PETA vice-president Tracy Reiman also commented: “Today is a historic day for animals in California, including those who have been whipped into performing in circuses, or skinned alive for their fur or skin.”
The laws was praised by Animal rights groups who are optimistic that other states will follow California’s example by introducing similar bans.
As would be expected, those with a stake in the multi-billion-dollar fur industry are not in favor of the new laws.
Keith Kaplan from the Fur Information Council saying it was part of a ‘radical vegan agenda’, using fur as ‘the first step to other bans on what we wear and eat’. Kaplan is of the opinion that fake fur is not a renewable or sustainable option.
The new law excludes the use of leather or cow hides, the full skin of deer, sheep or goats and also does not apply to used products or to those used for religious or tribal purposes.
Offenders breaking the no-fur law could face a fine of $500 (£395) and repeat offenders a fine of up to $1,000 (£790).
A number of high-end fashion designers such as Gucci, Versace and Prada, have already stopped, or plan to stop, using fur in their designs.
