There’s no shortage of innovation when it comes to finding ways to incorporate smart technology with existing products such as plant containers that do the watering or home appliances and security that can be controlled remotely to make life easier.
The WeWalk smart cane, however, is so revolutionary it bagged the 2018 Edison Award, one of the most prestigious innovation awards in the USA.
We walk is a smart tech attachment for the traditional white cane used by the visually impaired, helping with navigating busy streets. The attachment has built-in speakers, Google maps, Voice Assistant, is compatible with smart phone Bluetooth systems and has special sensors that vibrate to alert the user of obstacle above chest level. The aim of these tools is to “support the visually impaired in their full participation into social life.”
Engineer Kursat Ceylan, CEO and co-founder of Young Guru Academy (YGA), a Turkish non-profit behind WeWALK, being visually impaired himself, drew from his own experiences to develop this wide-reaching and meaningful technological device.
“In these days we are talking about flying cars, but these people have been using just a plain stick,” he explained to CNN. “As a blind person, when I am at the Metro station I don’t know which is my exit… I don’t know which bus is approaching… which stores are around me. That kind of information can be provided with the WeWalk.”
