The remote village of Vals, Switzerland, is home to photographer Sandro Casutt and his brother, Markus. Vals, with a population of 990 and happens to be the prime site for viewing the Andromeda Galaxy, which, at about 2.5 million light years, is the closest major galaxy to the Milky Way.
Two years ago, the brothers started Cosmic Art Photography as a showcase for the love of the universe. Tatoo parlor owner by day, Casutt spends his evenings scouting for the perfect sky views to photograph Andromeda. Taken over the different seasons, the shots show incredible views of the galaxy, the largest of a cluster of 54 galaxies known as the Local Group. Andromeda is 220,000 light years across and expected to collide with the Milky Way in 4.5 billion years.
Casutt’s lens captures some of the trillion stars populating the Andromeda, including nebulae casting glowing colours into the night sky. The Casutt brothers offer workshops at Vals throughout the year for astronomy enthusiasts.
