A company is sourcing surplus milk from china and turning it into clothes that are tenable, enduring, and light. It takes a couple of months to carry out the entire process turning milk into sustainable clothing and five glasses of milk give you one shirt.
Any business model cannot ignore the environmental aspect of its business. It entails a reduction in waste generated, thorough recycling of resources, and the promotion of conservation. Every year we find companies coming up with better and innovative ways to process the waste generated by one industry. A start-up based out of Los Angeles has found a novel way to focus attention towards the waste thrown up by the milk industry and make the whole process sustainable.

The company buys milk from various Chinese dairies and then processes it to turn it into fibers that can be used to manufacture durable and light clothing.

It’s time we throw light on the disturbing fact that dairy products weighing 128 million tons are dumped each year globally. The founder of Mi Terro says that the goal of the company is to draw attention to this waste and the need to bring it down. In his effort to cut the wastage from the industry, the entrepreneur espied an opportunity that converts excess milk into sustainable clothing: shirts of excellent quality.

The process to turn milk into sustainable clothing takes two months from start to finish. The milk is collected, processed, and dried into powdered milk. Casein, the protein in milk, is isolated, immersed in an alkaline solution, and turned into fibers. The fibers then are spun into yarn and are then ready for making clothes.
Only a couple of Chinese manufacturers can make clothing from milk. Luo plans to next collect waste milk from supermarkets and use it in his venture. Luo has also forayed into sustainable fashion accessories, making travels bags from natural cork and ocean plastic. He dreams of making the planet green again. He plans to educate people on the need for eco-friendly goods that throw up minimal waste.

As a part of his dream of sustainability, the startup, in partnership with the Eden Reforestation Project, plants 10 trees in exchange for each product sold and have planted more than 2,700 trees. The non-profit startup is a venture that operates in 5 countries from 80 sites. It provides fair employment to the impoverished local villagers and encourages them to turn into foresters. The initiative strives to bring down inequality, work on local biodiversity, and also protect our environment. In the next five years, Mi Terro aims to plant one million trees.

Mi Terro aims to be an example of environmental consciousness. It is a part of this generation that aims for green innovation in every sphere. Luo wants future generations to live a life that we see slowly slipping away.
Responsible customers and companies can contribute to sustainable business models. They must encourage more companies like Mi Terro into following the conservative path.
We need to reduce waste and encourage business models that are environmental-friendly. We need to immediately move to reduce waste and source sustainable resources. An aware consumer is the most important link in the chain.
The use of responsible products can both reduce waste and raise awareness among people. Mi Terro’s initiative on Kickstarter, of turning milk into sustainable clothing, got funded within hours of its launch. It is an encouraging sign that conservation matters.
