There’s hope for our world when legends like David Gilmour, Pink Floyd guitarist and songwriter, put their money where their hearts are. In Gilmour’s case, this happens to be raising awareness about climate change. So much so that he donated the proceeds from the auction of 126 guitars from his collection, held in June, to charity.
Guitar World reported Gilmour’s guitars shattered records at the auction with a total of $21 million, with the iconic black Stratocaster the star of the sale with a winning bid of $3,975 million from the owner of the Indianapolis Colts. Gilmour used the black Stratocaster record ‘’Comfortably Numb,’’ ‘’Shine on You Crazy Diamond’’ and ‘’Money.’’

Gilmour donated every dollar to the environmental non-profit, ClientEarth, tweeting:
“The global climate crisis is the greatest challenge that humanity will ever face, and we are within a few years of the effects of global warming being irreversible. We need a civilized world that goes on for all our grandchildren and beyond in which these guitars can be played and songs can be sung.”
According to NASA, 97% of climate scientists agree that Earth is changing because of high levels of carbon emissions caused by human activity. Failure to lower emissions now and in the immediate future will increase catastrophic disasters and the extinction of species worldwide.
“I’d like to express my deep and heartfelt gratitude to David Gilmour for this utterly remarkable gift. David has a long history of supporting charities and I am honored that he has chosen ClientEarth to benefit from this landmark auction,” said James Thornton, ClientEarth CEO.
