Maestro of vertical forests, Italian architect Stefano Boeri’s first African project will be three cube-shaped apartments in Egypt. The seven story buildings will set in in Egypt’s New Administrative Capital, east of Cairo, bringing much needed green vegetation to the area.
Stefano Boeri Architetti has vertical forest projects in nearly every continent and for this project teamed up with Egyptian designer Shimaa Shalash and Italian landscape architect Laura Gatti. To create the forests, Boeri estimates they will need 350 trees and 14,000 shrubs and use over 100 species of plants for the project, considerably improving the quality of the air in the area.
As with all their vertical garden projects, detailed planning is required to ensure plants are selected for the local climate, blooming seasons, width and height to create the perfect landscape. The forests will not only be beautiful but provide shade and provide clean air by absorbing an estimated seven tons of carbon dioxide and producing approximately eight tons of oxygen per year.
Construction of the cubes, measuring 900 square meters, will begin in 2020 and completion estimated for 2022. Two of the cubes will be residential and the third a hotel.
The cubes are the springboard for Boeri’s vision of an environmentally transformed Cairo and Boeri, together with architect Francesca Cesa Bianchi, announced the ‘’Greener Cairo’’ initiative to turn the current roofs into green roofs, transforming the flat vertical surfaces and creating a green corridor running through the city.
