Towards the end of June 2019, a mountaineer stumbled upon a rather beautiful, but unsettling sight.
While up in the French Alps, Bryan Mestre discovered a lake at an altitude of 11,100ft while climbing the Mont Blanc mountain range.
What was truly unsettling was the fact that 10 days prior, it was not there.
In an Instagram post, Mr Mestre wrote:
Time to sound the alarm… The problem here? These two pictures were taken only 10 days apart… It was taken earlier on June 28th, the second one was shared by Paul Todhunter.
Only 10 days of extreme heat were enough to collapse, melt and form a lake at the base of the Dent du Géant and the Aiguilles Marbrées That I know, this is the first time anything like that as ever happened.
It is suspected that the recent heat wave throughout Europe could be the cause and this confirms what scientists have been saying for years regarding weather pattern shifts and how they will affect this beautiful planet.
The shock came to Mestre when he was discussing his find with IFLScience, noting that the lake was discovered well above the snow line.
He explained:
You’re supposed to find ice and snow at this altitude, not liquid water. Most of the time when we stay for a day at this altitude, the water in our water bottles starts freezing.
I have been up there a fair amount of times, in June, July and even August, and I have never seen liquid water up there, and I’m not only talking about Mt Blanc massif, I have been up dozens of [mountains] around the Alps.
During the hottest days, you may find snow melting, but that’s it.
In 2015, glaciologist Ludovic Ravanel spotted a smaller lake. It was back then that he warned that this was the start of a much greater problem and that it will only get worse.
Last June was recorded as the hottest ever on Earth and Europe’s Copernicus Climate Change Service has noted that on average, the temperature is more than 2°C above normal levels.
Spain, Germany and France were worst affected, with temperatures soaring from 6°C to 10°C above normal levels.
If that’s not an eye opener to how real climate change is, I honestly don’t know what more it would take.
