Let’s face it, New Year’s Eve and July the 4th are a living horror for dogs.
Sadly, while our beloved pets have us to comfort them through these festivities, shelter dogs are not so lucky.
One shelter came up with a brilliant idea and can I just say, I am in awe.
“When they have these noise phobias, it’s horrible,” noted veterinarian Marty Becker said. “A lot of times these dogs will self-mutilate. I’ve had dogs come in that have run through a plate-glass window. They think they’re going to die, and when you think you’re going to die, you do crazy things.”

Calming The Canines at Maricopa County Animal Care & Control (MCACC) came up with a new Independence Day tradition I think we can all get behind and it has proven itself as one of the kindest efforts for shelter animals.
Over 300 local community members showed up at the shelter’s two locations around Phoenix Arizona to comfort the terrified dogs.
“It was overwhelming to see how the community responded,” Ben Swan, the shelter’s development director, said in a press release. “It really helped spread our message that MCACC is here to help.”

Amy Engel who runs the AZ Dawg Saverz Facebook page has made sure that she will be attending every year following.
“Some people sang to them, some people read to them, some people just sat there and gave treats!” Engel wrote. “It was so, so awesome because the dogs absolutely love the attention and were focused on the people and not the fireworks going on outside.”

The best part is, from last year’s turnout, many people kept returning to visit the animals they spent time with, many offering fostering, some even opening their homes to adopt.
