Camille Schrier is a biochemist and recently, was crowned Miss Virginia. She didn’t wow the crowd in a stunning bikini, she went further than that.
Camille showcased her talents with an exciting science experiment.
The ladies usually sing, pull a rabbit out of a hat or do a little dance, but Camille stepped onto stage in a lab coat and goggles which caught everyone’s attention.
She further proceeded to display the catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide and after carefully mixing chemicals into beakers in various solutions, she concluded with an amazing explosion of foam in blue and orange, more commonly known as the Elephant Toothpaste reaction to lab folk.
Ms. Shrier has suggested that the recent overhaul of the competition has created an environment of greater value in true talent and social impact and this is the reasoning for her entering pageants again.

“The evolution of the Miss America competition, which reflects greater inclusiveness, and an opportunity to make a difference and win scholarships inspired me to step forward this year and compete,” she told IFLScience.
“I am more than Miss Virginia. I am Miss Biochemist, Miss Systems Biologist, Miss Future PharmD looking toward a pharmaceutical industry career.”
The patronizing swimsuit competition being replaced was warmly welcomed by most, with Miss America 2.0 spending more time focused on highlighting achievements and goals, with dress codes moving from traditional evening gowns to clothing the candidates feel would better express their true selves.
The Miss America website suggests a focus on women rather than stereotypes.

“We are no longer a pageant. Miss America will represent a new generation of female leaders focused on scholarship, social impact, talent, and empowerment” said Gretchen Carlson, Chair of the Board of Trustees.
“We’re experiencing a cultural revolution in our country with women finding the courage to stand up and have their voices heard on many issues. Miss America is proud to evolve as an organization and join this empowerment movement.”

Now representing Virginia in the nationwide competition, Ms. Schrier is a strong candidate for Miss America 2.0 with dual Bachelor of Science degrees from Virginia Tech in Biochemistry and Systems Biology and she’s currently studying a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree at Virginia Commonwealth University.
She chose a science experiment as her talent as she wanted to inspire others about the beauty of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) field.

“I’m trying to be like Bill Nye,” she said in a university blog. “That’s what I’m going for. I want to get kids excited, but I don’t want it to be boring.”

One cannot emphasize how encouraging Camille has been, bringing awareness regarding science and engineering and how important this is to women, with men dominating the field, with 81% of degrees being awarded to men.
Ms. Schrier’s victory does not only celebrate her uniqueness, but it celebrates science as well and I truly hope that many more young girls will follow in her footsteps, hungry for the challenge to achieve the highest of levels in scientific research.
