For now, this is the only planet we have to live on, so we need to kickstart ourselves into gear to clean it up, just like Pat Smith from the UK has done.
Hailing from Cornwall, Pat is a grandmother who is 70 years old and at that age, she’s most likely done a lot more than you or I have for the planet.
Pat watched a documentary a while back on plastic pollution and it unsettled her to her very core. So she challenged herself to get up, go out there and clean up a beach a week.

Her fellow townspeople soon warmly took to the idea and supported her venture, along with her grandchildren and eager volunteers who accomplished a mammoth task.
The team cleared 52 beaches in Cornwall in just 2018 and that’s not all – she is still going strong on her journey to make a better world for us all to live in.

Many folk thought that Pat was simply cleaning up the beaches in a community service effort. Pat mentions that we should all be taking responsibility for cleaning up behind ourselves and this could all be avoided by not littering in the first place.

Pat has since launched an initiative called The Final Straw which is aimed at raising awareness about the harm generic plastic straws are doing to the environment, hoping to make an impact in the complete removal of plastic straws.

Pat has also partnered with a few notable individuals including Martin Dorey who founded 2 Minute Beach Clean. Additionally, Wayne Dixon has stepped on on board, walking the shores of the United Kingdom as an ambassador for Keep Britain Tidy.
Plastic straws are an example of the destruction simple use plastics have on our environment, serving little to no use, ending up in their millions on landfills and strewn across our oceans. The worst most chilling part is that every straw currently in existence will outlive several generations of humans.
