How The Sacred Plant Medicine ‘Ayahuasca’ Can Actually Heal Depression

Ayahuasca has seen quite a bit of attention in recent times and it’s no wonder why. Known as a powerful psychoactive plant medicinally used among the Amazon tribes for centuries, the plant is known to heal physical and emotional issues, assisting people in their journey to feeling whole again.

Considered too radical by most healthcare professionals, many seek out their own journey of healing with Ayahuasca.

There are even professionally run ayahuasca retreats where one can seek transformation in a safe, grounded setting with trained professionals there to guide you through the entire process of renewal.

Ayahuasca has been long considered a very effective treatment for deep rooted depression and researchers from Brazil published results from the first clinical trial which tested the potential therapeutic benefit for ayahuasca consumption.

Ayahuasca’s antidepressant effects seem to stem from its ability to boost concentrations of the neurotransmitter serotonin.

In 2016, a review of observations found that a preliminary 2015 study saw an 82% reduction in depression among patients, improving planning and inhibitory control, which applied anti-depressive and anti-addictive qualities. Along with the findings, many patients have been found to find better results in Ayahuasca where common antidepressants were failing.

Banisteriopsis caapi, the Ayahuasca vine contains a mono-amine oxidase inhibiting beta-carboline, which reduces the clearing of serotonin from the synaptic cleft.

One of the constituents of the vine, THH causes an increased platelet serotonin density with veterans considering the plant to assist in treating depression and PTSD.

In a modern world, there is great hope that Ayahuasca could treat debilitating anxiety related mental illnesses safely, without the need for treatment plans that so often fail society, which would force mental health professionals to pay attention and take serious note of what the miracle plant is capable of.

For now, all we can do is trust the process and keep on spreading the good message of going back to our roots, quite literally.
