And then we will use what we learn on the Moon to take the next giant leap – sending astronauts to Mars”

NASA  Administrator Jim Bridenstine made this known at the Space Symposium, adding that the phases for lunar exploration are to get humans to the moon as fast as possible, then make it sustainable to conduct long-term missions. #Moon2024″.

People say, ‘Why are you accelerating the mission to the Moon?’ Well, because it accelerates our mission to Mars. We’re capturing the imagination of the American public.” @JimBridenstine explains how our #Moon2024 plans are ultimately taking us to our planetary neighbor.

Who will go to the Moon? The first woman and next man who will leave bootprints on the lunar surface in the next 5 years will be American astronauts.

“We need to get to more parts of the moon than we have ever gotten to ever before,” he said. “When you look at the Apollo program, we had six landings, all in the equatorial regions of the moon, and we didn’t get the full perspective, the full understanding, the science and the knowledge.”

Bridenstine also said he sees the moon as a way forward to points farther out in the solar system.

“I think a lot of people miss the fact that the moon represents an amazing proving ground for all of the technologies and the human-performance capabilities that are necessary to survive on another planet and the ability to develop in-situ utilization abilities,” Bridenstine said. “The moon represents the capabilities to do that activity for the first time, rather than doing it on Mars for the first time, where you can’t come home for another two years.”

The Moon is a treasure chest of science. The lunar samples returned during the Apollo Program dramatically changed our view of the solar system. Yet, we are just scratching the surface of knowledge about the Moon. We believe the poles of the Moon hold millions of tons of water ice. That ice represents power. It represents fuel. It represents science. The farther humans venture into space, the more important it becomes to manufacture materials and products with local resources. We know the Moon can tell us more about our own planet, and even our own sun. There is so much more to learn – knowledge we can acquire with a sustained human and robotic presence on the Moon.

Exploration for all humanity

Exploration is in the DNA of our species – the desire to discover and inhabit distant worlds, whether across Earthly oceans or vast regions of space. It also is critical to the continuation of our species. Humanity must build a path to an Earth-independent existence.

Exploration of the Moon and Mars is intertwined. Our sustainable Moon to Mars exploration approach is reusable and repeatable. Over the next decade, we will build an open exploration architecture with as many capabilities that can be replicated as possible for missions to Mars. The Moon is a testbed for Mars. It provides an opportunity to demonstrate new technologies that could help build self-sustaining outposts off Earth.
