Like we needed any more of an excuse to love the iconic Willie Nelson, news just in – the man loves horses!
In fact, he’s so fond of them that he has rescued 70 of them, bound for slaughter. These lucky equines now roam on his 700 acre Texas ranch, with Willie spending most of his time there, when not on the road.
Named ‘Luck’, suiting him in more ways than one, Nelson told Paul Venema from KSAT 12 News, “When you’re here, you’re in Luck, and when you’re not, you’re out of Luck.”
The horses are lucky too – undoubtedly he agrees.
He told Venema:
“My horses are probably the luckiest horses in the world. They get hand-fed twice a day, and they were just ready to go to slaughter is probably the last thing they remembered, so they’re happy horses.”
Willie Nelson has had a long love for horses, with his song Ride Me Back Home attesting to his love for these magnificent animals.
He has also won an award for his music video for the song The Love Of Horses, showing Nelson meeting with members of Habitats for Horses, who were working to get a new legislation passed, ending the slaughter of the animals.
It seems this love for horses runs in the family, as Nelson’s son, Lukas supports Saving America’s Horses as well as Habitat for Horses, with Lukas Nelson & Promise, the younger band likewise singing their praise.
Nelson is nearly 90, but he shows no signs of slowing down, refusing to stay silent about the issues he feels strongly about.
“I retire after every show. I say, ‘That’s it, I’m not goin’ no more,’ but then we hang out awhile and people [the band] feel like playing, and so we go play again.”
