At the age of 11, most children are dreaming of what they could become when they grow up…maybe an astronaut, a doctor, an actor, or a firefighter. They are probably spending their free time running around outside climbing trees or focusing on beating the next level in their video game.
Then there’s William the child genius from Pennsylvania. He is not like most children. He is not even dreaming of what he will be when he grows up…he is already becoming it. He is on his way to becoming an astrophysicist who proves God’s existence through science. At least, that is his mission. William’s ferocious desire to become an astrophysicist is deeply rooted in his strong faith beliefs. He is only 11 years old and he already knows his purpose in life.
This boy is so unbelievably smart that he already completed community college classes and enrolled at Carnegie Mellon University last fall. He graduated from high school when he was just 9 years old! The Ohio State University psychologist, Joanne Ruthsatz, has literally declared him a GENIUS.
“We’re normal people and he’s a normal kid. You can’t distinguish him from other 11-year-olds. He likes sports, television shows, the computer and video games like everyone else.” – Peter Maillis (his father)
His father, a Greek Orthodox Priest called Peter Maillis, says that William began speaking in full sentences at just seven months old. A few months before turning 2 years old he was doing addition, and then multiplication by the age of two. Also by the age of 2, he was already reading children’s books, and writing his own nine-page book called “Happy Cat.” When he was 4 years old, before the age when most children are going to Kindergarten, he was learning algebra, sign language, and how to read Greek. When he turned 5, he read an entire 209-page geometry textbook in one night; the next morning he woke up solving circumference problems for breakfast.
Now he is set on proving some of the biggest names in science wrong. He has his own ideas to prove the existence of the universe. He disagrees with some of Einstein and Hawking’s theories on black holes. William wants to prove that an outside force is the only thing capable of creating the universe, which means that “God does exist.”
Even though the boy feels so strongly about God, and his father is a priest, his parents say that they have never pushed him toward his studies or this God-proving endeavor. He is perusing this all on his own accord.
When asked what is dreams are in a recent interview with Hellenic College Holy Cross, William replied:
“I want to be an astrophysicist so that I can prove to the scientific world that God does exist.”
Stephen Hawking held extremely contrasting beliefs. He once said:
“Before we understood science, it was natural to believe that God created the universe, but now science offers a more convincing explanation. What I meant by ‘we would know the mind of God’ is we would know everything that God would know if there was a God, but there isn’t. I’m an atheist.”
When asked why he felt the need to prove Hawking’s wrong, William gave this profound explanation:
“Well because there’s these atheists that try to say that there is no God, when in reality it takes more faith to believe that there’s no God than it does to believe that there is a God… Because it makes more sense that something created the universe than that the universe created itself. It takes more faith to say the universe created itself than to say something other created the universe because that is more logical.”
William is determined to defend his faith. He is the perfect example of a person with a calling, someone born to this Earth with a set purpose. Some could argue that he alone is enough proof to prove God’s existence. One thing is certain, at the rate he’s going, he will surely play an important role in getting science back to its religious roots, whether or not he proves God exists.
