Confucius, considered as one of the most significant Chinese philosophers, had left an immeasurable influence in East Asian intellectual and social history.

His theories touched subjects on ethics and philosophies relating to personal, governmental morality, the correctness of social relationships, and justice among others.

His ideas, though ancient, are still very relevant to today’s society. Some of his teachings are enumerated below. When you learn to follow them, you will ultimately change your life for the best.

9 Lessons From Confucius That Will Change Your Life:

Just keep moving

Confucius wisely instructs that one must keep moving on in his life’s journey. While consistency might be a lot harder to achieve than you think, it is the only key to reaching your destination.

You must continue on persisting and must never give up. Eventually, you will attain your goals. Making it may not be carved in stone, but one day you will, when you persist in moving on.

Be in good company

Whether you are aware of it or not, the people you spend most of your time with greatly influence your thoughts and behaviors. Hence, you must take time in considering the company you surround yourself.

Having the right friends who care for you and you for them, makes a positive, social circle. They do matter in your development and happiness.

Cultivate patience

As we have always known, good things take time to happen. By cultivating patience, you prevent yourself from succumbing to the temptations of negativity.

Patience is a virtue that honors not your ability to wait, but your ability to keep a good attitude while waiting. Once you acquire the good thing that you wait for so long, you not only have it but have the right attitude as well.

Let go of the wrongs

As Confucius puts it, “To be wronged is nothing unless you continue to remember it.” Like the rest of us, you may have struggled with setbacks and heartbreaks in life. Remembering the evils done to you will make you stuck in life and will prevent you from living your best life.

Instead of seeing the wrongs done to you as negative, you can conquer it by seeing the wisdom it brings. Someone or something might be taken away from you because it was not meant for you.

Learn to let go of the wrongs and move forward with ease while on your way to achieving your goals.

Watch your anger

Confucius said, “When anger rises, think of the consequences.” Anger, if left unchecked, will lead you to quickly do terrible things that you will soon regret.

Whenever you are angry, take a step back, and remember this 5-5-5 rule. Ask yourself, will it matter in 5 minutes? Will it matter in 5 days? Will it matter in 5 years? If the answers are no, you better move on. Or better yet, take deep breathes and act a measured response only when you are sure your anger has subsided a bit.

Be open to adjustments

Sometimes life does not follow a linear pattern. Confucius advised that if you can’t seem to attain your goals, you should not change your goals but change your plan of action.

Learn to make certain adjustments in life, like a sailor who constantly adjusts his sails in response to the winds that he has no control over.

Never give up on your dreams just because your plan fails. It may take time to adjust, but it’s worth it when it’s the only way to achieving your dreams.

Everyone is your teacher

Confucius shared a nice point when he said, “If I am walking with two other men, each of them will serve as my teacher. I will pick out the good points of the one and imitate them and bad points of the other and correct them in myself.”

No matter how lowly or highly a person appears to be, they carry certain lessons that are helpful in your development. When someone comes along, ask what the other person can teach you, or you may also ask yourself what you can teach to the other person.

All or nothing

“Wherever you go, go with all your heart,” said Confucius.

Wherever life takes you, go with all your being. Put your heart, mind, body, and soul in whatever you do. When you put all in, everybody will notice your passion and energy. Changing the world may even be possible.

It pays to sharpen your tools

According to Confucius, “The mechanic that would perfect his work must first sharpen his tools.”

This means preparation is key in all undertakings. One could not perceive success with inadequate means.

Because greatness does not come easily, you must put in a lot of hard work to achieve success in life.
