When Kimiko Nishimoto was 72 years young she picked up a camera and fell in love with photography. It all began when her son was teaching a beginner’s course and so she decided to enroll. Since then she has been delighting people across the globe with her quirky self-portrait photograpy. She is now 90 years young and still as enthusiastic about the art as the day she began.

“I love the sound of a shutter clicking. Cameras have opened a window to another world for me. It would be boring just sitting around the house all day.” – Nishimoto

She uses photography as a way to exercise by walking around her house looking for inspiration. When she becomes inspired by something, she sets up a tripod and takes self-portraits using a remote control. Her portfolio features light-hearted images of herself, and sometimes with friends, in fantastical situations.

“I just want to do something funny,” Nishimoto says with a smile during an interview with The Japan Times in Tokyo. “As far as I’m concerned, life is all about being playful. I look around my house and am always finding fun things to photograph.”

By using the aid of photo manipulation programs, she imagines herself riding a broom like a witch and speaking to a bird as she floats in mid-air, and all kinds of comical scenes. She likes to create images where she is being mischievous too, like tying someone up to a chair, and crashing a scooter.

“It’s easy to smile or laugh at the camera but the other expressions are difficult to re-create because you’re not really feeling any pain or distress,” Nishimoto says.

There’s one photo that shows a pained Nishimoto sitting inside a trash bag that says “household burnable garbage.” She explains the inspiration behind that image:

“Why did I do it? I saw the garbage bag filled with trash and figured I might as well be trash too because I am old,” Nishimoto says with a laugh before emphasizing that she’s only talking about herself and not elderly people in general. “I just love humor.”

Her dramatic editing choices really enhance the playful image she wants to portray. Most older people say they are too old to understand technology. Nishimoto proves there’s no such thing! She takes the photos, edits them, and uploads them to her Instagram account all herself. And It’s a very popular profile with hundreds of thousands of followers too. Age has nothing to do with the ability to use electronics. It’s all about the desire and the will…Like everything in life.
