Leonardo DiCaprio should be a familiar presence to any movie lover. The actor has starred in more than 30 films to date in his career, which have inspired millions.

Lesser known, but perhaps more importantly, DiCaprio is a noted activist for many progressive issues facing the world today, such as climate change, animal extinction and protections for

indigenous nations. He hosts the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation Galaonce a year, and has raised millions of dollars for environmental preservation. In addition, the actor has been an honored guest at events such as the 2014 United Nations Climate Summit, and the 2015 Global Citizen Festival.

Therefore, when DiCaprio gave his acceptance speech following his Golden Globe award for best actor for his work in the film The Revenant, it was no surprise that he took some time at the end of the speech to dedicate the award to indigenous tribes past and present:

And lastly, I want to share this award with all the First Nations people represented in this film and all the indigenous communities around the world. It is time that we recognize your history and that we protect your indigenous lands from corporate interests and people that are out there to exploit them. It is time that we heard your voice and protected this planet for future generations.

The Revenant takes place in a time when much of America was a vast wilderness in the process of being settled by European descendants, and addresses some of the realities of life for both natives and settlers alike. DiCaprio’s dedication is important because it bridges the gap between pop culture and the reality for indigenous people, who even today face a drastically changing world at odds with political and business interests.
