Falling through ice on a frozen lake can be terrifying, but if you keep calm you can save your own life. This video demonstrates what happens to your body when you fall into freezing water and how to climb back out onto the ice.
This video was conducted with help on hand so definitely don’t try this on your own.
As the instructor demonstrates, when you first fall into the water, your body will go into shock for 1-3 minutes. You’ll start to hyperventilate, but resist the impulse and try to keep as calm as possible in order to give yourself the best chance to survive.
When you find a solid portion of ice, pull yourself up while staying as horizontal as possible. Kick your legs to push yourself out of the water. Once you’re entirely on the ice, roll away. Don’t stand up immediately. You want to keep your weight distributed when you’re close to the hole. If you have ice picks on you, you can also use these to pull yourself away from the hole. Once you’re out, get out of your wet clothes and into something warm as soon as possible.
