The Manang Road, along the Annapurna mountain range in Nepal, is one of the most dangerous roads in the world. It is not just a long and windy road along a mountain, but sections of the road are also in the middle of a giant waterfall.
The road stretches for 95.8 km, starting in a town called Besishahar, and ends in Manang, which is 11,545 ft above sea level.
This is an ancient road that once connected many Buddhist monasteries.
As one traveler pointed out:
Development of roadways in Mustang region was done earlier than Manang side. Mustang region boast typical cultural heritage of country and preserving ancient old Buddhist monasteries since centuries. Muktinath temple, being Hindu and Buddhist shrine will steal your attention after long descend from the Thorong La pass. Gateway to Upper Mustang can be seen from Kagbeni while walking towards Jomsom.
Traveling through this road could take many days. At some points in the year, the road is closed down to tourists because it is too dangerous and impossible to cross. In warmer months there is more water because ice and snow from the mountain melts and floods the area.
There are many incredible views along the way, including Marpha (Apple Capital of Nepal), Kalopani (Dhaulagiri Ice fall view), Ghasa village and Tatopani (natural hot spring).
For travelers who are not brave enough to take the road, there is an airport located in Manang.
The videos below show just how treacherous this path can be.
Another view of the trail was taken in September of 2015, which showed trucks coming up the waterfall path.
Things don’t always go smoothly on this road though, in the video below a Jeep got stuck, until it was eventually freed and able to continue its journey.
