Magnum Launches Vegan Ice Creams In Europe And UK

Internationally renowned ice cream brand, Magnum, is launching its first-ever range of vegan ice creams. Two new flavours, the Magnum Vegan Classic and Magnum Vegan Almond, are now available throughout Europe and in UK stores including Tesco.

Made from pea protein-based ice cream and smooth vegan chocolate, Magnum’s new dairy-free product is approved by the European Vegetarian Union as suitable for vegans, reports MTV Finland.

In addition totak[ing] pride in the art of fine ice cream,” Magnum is becoming increasingly sustainability conscious. To create its Magnum Dark Intense ice cream, the company uses  70 percent cocoa sourced from sustainably grown Rainforest Alliance cocoa beans. According to Kespro,a leading Finish food wholesaler, the vegan ice creams will also be Rainforest Alliance Certified.

THE FUTURE OF ICE CREAM IS VEGAN

Given both the influence and size of Magnum, the company’s foray into vegan ice cream may be monumental – its existing dairy products are a firm favorite around the world. Originally developed in Belgium, the brand was even rated the number one best-selling ice cream on the planet by Forbes in 2016, ahead of other major ice-cream favourites such as Ben & Jerry’s and Häagen-Dazs.

While Magnum’s first vegan products are, at this time, known only to be launching in Finland and Sweden, there is hope that the company will expand its dairy-free options to other locations, like competitor Ben & Jerry’s. In addition to the U.S., Ben & Jerry’s vegan options are now so popular they are stocked in stores and supermarkets across Asia, Australia, and the UK.

In the UK especially, the vegan ice cream industry is booming. One vegan ice cream van in the country, run by animal rights organization Viva!, recently struggled to keep up with demand whilst it journeyed to several different counties. The van was part of an (evidently popular) campaign to show the British public how delicious nondairy ice cream is, while also raising awareness of the inherent cruelty of the dairy industry.

Even an India-based dairy brand, Hangyo, has released two new vegan ice cream flavours as part of the first-ever government supporteddairy-free ice cream venture.
