It’s so easy to fall into the trap of work-sleep-work-sleep-work-sleep… you get the point. In this day and age we all seem to fill our lives with endless jobs and tasks and never really have any time for ourselves. Time where you can actually just chill and not have to do anything or even think about anything.

It’s no wonder most of us go to bed exhausted and filled with dread about the next coming day. It can be hard to find a perfect work/life balance. For most of us our morning routine consists of alarm clocks and coffee.

Do you ever wake up and be so tired already even though you’ve just been to sleep? That’s not a great start to any day! Then you remember you have work to go to and all the other stuff you have to do that day. Thoughts like “Do I really need this job?” plague your mind.

Of course naturally we get sucked in to dwelling on all the negatives that come from a busy life. Staying positive all the time doesn’t come naturally. It takes effort and focus, which can be difficult when you’re always busy and don’t actually have a chance to decompartmentalize.

A good way to break this cycle is by remembering that we have total control over our thoughts. And our thoughts create our emotions. If you learn to be mindful about your perception of your day and how it’s going to go, you will learn to change the way you feel about it.

Here are a few things you can try to wake up happier:

Try to remember your dreams

Dreams can contain hidden messages. Sometimes they can be linked to your subconscious, which can actually give you insight into things you need to be aware of in your life.

Take a few minutes to show gratitude

This practise can shift your mindset from negative thinking to positive thinking without really trying. Focusing on the things in your life you have to be grateful for really does change your perception. Sometimes the stuff that bothers us, or stresses us out, becomes insignificant in comparison to what you have to be grateful for.

Drink a full glass of water

One of the best things you can do to start your day is to drink a glass of water as soon as you wake up. It fires up your metabolism, hydrates you, flushes your body of toxins, fuels you brain for the day and makes you eat less.

Set intentions for the day

Having a strong focus for the day means really being in the zone. This prevents outside influences from your environment from messing with your zen. Imagine yourself in a giant bubble, if it helps. As soon as you allow external things to affect your motivation and concentration, you lose touch with the bigger picture and become too focused on meaningless things. Intentions can make a huge difference – don’t just wing it!

Consider what makes you happy

Isn’t that the whole point of life anyway?! Don’t we all want to be happy? There must be something in your life that makes you happy, that overrides everything else? If not, you must know what would make you happy, therefore you know what you are lacking. When you think and talk about what you want and how to get it, you feel happier and in greater control of your life. When you think about something that makes you happy, your brain actually releases endorphin’s.
