Conquer Fear in 5 Seconds
Although people may say fear doesn’t exist and it is just false evidence appearing real – which in some sense it is, however it is still a strong feeling that plays a huge factor in the decisions we make in life. Whether it be feeling scared to call someone or put yourself out there. Whatever the decision may be that you are not doing due to fear is still something that is causing procrastination or holding back.
It is easy for people to say “just feel the fear and do it anyway” which is all great but what if you really can’t?
Well If you are someone who over thinks and doubts yourself, the 5 Second rule could be a life changer for you especially when you are about to do something scary.
Change your life 5 seconds at time.
Mel Robbons shares an unbelievable technique on conquering fear in 5 seconds in her book the 5 Second Rule.
Your brain doesn’t actually know the difference between what you feel excited about or what you fear. As both emotions cause the same reaction in the body. The only difference is what you think about and are aware of.
When you get excited, you smile and say feel “I’m excited” when you are scared, you hesitating which sends a signal to your brain to protect you and stop you even more from going ahead as it thinks you are in danger.
So how to conquer fear in 5 seconds?
1: Feel the excitement
2: Reframe your nerves to a thought that makes you feel calm.
3: Instead of saying I’m scared, affirm “Im so excited to do this, I can’t wait, I’m feeling so excited.” so it tells your brain it’s OK.
4: Picture the end result of what ever you want going well.
5: Count 5,4,3,2,1 and do it!
The 5-second rule is named “the best life hack ever” and scientists say that all of the habits that stop hold us back can eventually be replaced by using the 5-second rule.
8 Ideas to use the 5 Second rule in your life:
1: Morning: When your alarm goes off… 5,4,3,2,1 – Get out of bed without snoozing.
2: Making a decision: Instead of wasting time over thinking, 5,4,3,2,1 decide, go with the 1st decision that comes to mind.
3: Exercise/In the gym: 5,4,3,2,1 do it.
4: Doing something you really don’t want to do.
5: Making a scary call!
6: Whenever you feel scared or nervous, 5,4,3,2,1 choose to control it.
7: Overthinking, when you start to doubt yourself and feel bad, 5,4,3,2,1 choose to stop.
8: Anger: Before you react in anger use the 5-second rule.
Most of our decisions are made because of the way we feel about it. If you come to accept the fact that you may not ever feel like doing something, but you continue to push yourself and just get it done regardless how you feel, this eventually will lead to amazing life transforming habits that could change your life and you will continue to see yourself as someone who takes constant action, which leads to confidence!
“You don’t need to be confident motivated or great to start, all you need is to push yourself.”
No one is ever ready, 5-4-3-2-1 DO IT.
