Kill ’em with kindness they say, and that’s just what this beautiful woman is doing to vicious internet trolls.

Dr. Susan Carland, an Australian academic and well-known figure in the Muslim community is sadly, quite accustomed to receiving ugly messages via Facebook and Twitter. As a Muslim woman who was born a Christian, she gets quite a lot of hateful messages from anti-Islamic racists. (Susan converted to Islam at age 19)

“I regularly get tweets and Facebook messages from the brave freedom-fighters behind determinedly anonymous accounts telling me that, as a Muslim woman, I love oppression, murder, war and sexism. Their online abuse ranges from requests to leave Australia, hope for my death, insults about my appearance (with a special focus on my hijab), accusations that I am a stealth jihadist, and that I am planning to take over the nation, one halal meat pie at a time.”

Silly really. Its funny how “brave” people can be behind a computer screen. Naturally, Susan, tried several different methods to deal with the bigots. She tried blocking, muting, engaging kindly, and ignoring the messages but none of her “fans” felt like she was “embodying the Koranic injunction of driving off darkness with light.”

“I felt I should be actively generating good in the world for every ugly verbal bullet sent my way. And so the idea of donating $1 to UNICEF for every hate-filled tweet I received came to me.” 2E53C51400000578-3313278-image-m-6_1447222117457

This is probably the most epic way she could have responded, and not surprisingly, others agree.

Susan chose UNICEF because the organization is known for assisting children who have been in horrific situations that are the direct result of hate, war, poverty due to greed, injustice, and violence. “These children seemed like the natural antidotes to hate,” she said.

“Donating to them every time I was abused felt like tangible good in response to virtual hate.”

Unfortunately, Susan’s act of kindness hasn’t silenced the Internet trolls, in fact, they have now started criticizing her choice of charity. Haters always got somethin’ to say.

“You cannot control others, but you can control how you respond to situations.”-Susan Carland

Ain’t that the truth.
