Mindfulness is the state of being conscious or aware of where we are and what we are doing, while not being overly reactive or overwhelmed to the things going on around us.

This is not as hard as the definition may make it seem. Practicing mindfulness is something we all can and should do. Below you will find a list of the 9 habits that will help you practice mindfulness. Some will seem to be challenging at first, but if you keep at it they will become simple and effective.

1. Take Mindful Showers

The next time you shower really relax and pay attention to the water as it falls. Allow yourself to appreciate all that the warm water is offering you, and really work towards a deep understanding.

2. Listen

Listen to whatever other people have to say without judgement. The more you listen to others the better understanding you will have.

3. Breathe Deeply

Deep breaths increase our awareness and allow us to calm our minds. It is important to remember not to rush things, you have to allow your body to breathe at its own pace.

4. Pay Attention to Nature

Appreciate all of the things that nature has to offer; breathe in all the smells and feel the earth under your feet. Do not think with your mind, but feel with your soul.

5. Practice Gratitude

Do not take anything this life has given you for granted. Take the time every single day to think over all of the things in life that you are grateful for.

6. Meditate

Even if it is just for twenty minutes a day, be alone with your thoughts, and free your mind of any negative energy.

7. Do Good Things

Make sure that you are helping others even if you are only able to do it in small ways. I love to volunteer some of my free time at soup kitchens and animal shelters. It is the small things that count, and believe me it will fill your heart with more love than you could have ever imagined.

8. Practice Mindful Eating

Experience your whole meal in a mindful manner. Take it all in, the taste, sound, smell, texture, and everything in-between. Feel your body experiencing each bite, and try to enjoy things on a deeper level.

9. Appreciate Yourself

This is the one that is hard for most people, but it is important to appreciate yourself for who you are. Really get to know your true inner self, and you will find that you are much more amazing than you ever could have imagined. Remember that passing judgement onto yourself is never going to get you anywhere.

Do these things every chance you get for the rest of your life, and I guarantee that you will feel much better. Taking control of your future is not as hard as it might seem. For more information on mindfulness check out the video below.
