According to scientists, we could possibly be adding another ocean to the world’s map. However, there is only one problem: the ocean is located 400 miles beneath Earth’s crust.
In a groundbreaking study, it was suggested that there is an ocean lying beneath the surface of the Earth, around 400 miles beneath North America. According to the study, this hidden area is held in place by a blue crystalline mineral called ringwoodite, and could possibly hold three times the amount of water currently existent on the surface of our planet.

“Geological processes on the Earth’s surface, such as earthquakes or erupting volcanoes, are an expression of what is going on inside the Earth, out of our sight,” The co-author, geophysicist Steve Jacobson explained.
“I think we are finally seeing evidence for a whole-Earth water cycle, which may help explain the vast amount of liquid water on the surface of our habitable planet. Scientists have been looking for this missing deep water for decades.”
He and his colleagues would be the first to provide evidence of such a phenomenon. In order to conduct their research, team members based their findings on a study of a vast underground region extending across most of the interior of the United States. Of course, with the location being 400 miles beneath the surface, it is easy to understand how difficult it will be to explore. As it stands, the deepest human borehole that has ever been created is just about 12km deep. Unfortunately, once you get too deep into the Earth, some strange things begin to happen.
For now, we can only imagine what mysteries lie below, but thankfully science has helped considerably. This only leaves room for one question: when will we know more about this ocean and its inhabitants?
